There is one thing in Minnesota that every get together has, it is a classic bar. A classic shortbread cookie crust topped with typically a soft and chewy batter baked firm. It's a classic desert that every one loves and these chocolate almond bars do not disappoint. The classic shortbread crust is topped with a fudgey chocolate batter that is set perfectly on top with almonds throughout. They are full of rich goodness that everyone will love.
In a mixing bowl, combine the ¾ cup of butter and the confectioner's sugar. Beat until smooth. Add the flour and mix until a consistent pea size crumble is formed. Pour the dough into a 13” x 9” pan. Press down into the pan. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Melt the remaining ⅓ cup of butter. Add the cocoa powder to the melted butter and beat until smooth.
Add the condensed milk, water, eggs, almond extract and salt. Whisk the batter until smooth, the batter will be thin but will thicken up slightly once well mixed. Stir in the sliced almonds.
Once the crust is done baking, pour the batter over the top making sure the almonds are evenly spread over the top. Bake for 25- 30 minutes or until the center has set.
Let the bars cool completely on a wire rack prior to cutting into squares. Store the bars refrigerator until ready to serve.
