These greek meatball sandwiches have the flavors of the classic gyro sandwiches and are simple to make at home. The meatball are made with simple ingredients and are baked in the oven so the preparation is quick and the cooking is completely hands off. The meatballs are wrapped in a pita with tomato and lettuce then drizzled with tzatziki sauce. It is a perfect quick weekday dinner that anyone can make.
In a bowl, combine the ground turkey or lamb, garlic, oregano, coriander, lemon zest, egg, salt and pepper until well combined.
Using a tablespoon or cookie scoop, make 1 ½” balls and place them on the grease pan. Bake the meatballs at 350°F until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F, about 12-15 minutes. Brown them under the broiler for about 2-5 minutes.
To make tzatziki sauce at home, follow the simple recipe below.
1 cups grated cucumber 1 cups plain Greek yogurt 1 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoons chopped fresh mint 2 teaspoon lemon juice 1 medium clove garlic, pressed or minced ½ teaspoon fine sea salt Using a colander, press out the excess water from the grated cucumber and add them to an empty bowl. Add the yogurt, olive oil, mint, lemon juice, garlic, and salt to the bowl, and stir to blend. Let the mixture rest for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Season to taste if needed.
Serve the meatballs warm with the tzatziki sauce, lettuce and diced tomatoes.
