In the summer, there is nothing better then a great juicy burger out on the patio. These Oklahoma style fried onion burger, there is a layer of fresh onions that are fired into the beef then flips over as the onion juices seep into the burger. Frying burgers in a cast iron skillet gives the exterior of the burger a great browned exterior and a juicy interior. The burgers come out juicy, messy and absolutely delicious served on a toasted buttered bun. It is hard to just have one.
Peel and cut the onion in half. Slice the onion into ⅛” thick slices. Sprinkle the onion slices with salt and pepper. Let the onions rest for 5-10 minutes. Dived the onions into 4 equal mounts. Pat each pile with a paper towel to make sure the onions are dry.
Divided the ground beef into 4 equal balls. Place each ball onto the onions and press the ground beef down into the onions to create a 4” wide round patty. Season the burgers with salt and pepper.
In a skillet or griddle pan, melt the butter and vegetable oil over medium heat. Grill each patty onion side down until the onions around the edges are golden brown and start to crisp, about 5-8 minutes.
Flip the burger over and cook until the burger is cooked and browned, additional 3-5 minutes.
Place a slice of cheese on the bottom bun and place the burger on top. Top with your favorite toppings if desired.
